Caring for an emerald ring without damaging the stone

An emerald ring can be worn and kept beautifully, but its care routine must suit the stone. A method appropriate for a simple diamond ring may be unsuitable for the emerald beside it.

Why avoid aggressive methods?

Fractures and possible fillers make cleaning precautions important. GIA does not recommend ultrasonic or steam cleaning for emeralds. Gentle cleaning with lukewarm soapy water is the usual option, adapted to the item's condition and other materials in its setting.

Before cleaning

Inspect the claws and stone edges. If you notice movement, a damaged corner or an apparently new fracture, stop and request examination. Do not scrub to determine whether it is merely dirt. Photograph the change and record when you noticed it.

For jewellery in good condition, handle gently and avoid temperature shocks. Work over a container rather than an open drain. Allow the jewellery to dry before storing it.

At the workshop

Discuss resizing, soldering or a new setting with the stone's information available. Bring its report and disclose previous repairs. “Just a small adjustment” does not describe everything a jeweller needs to know.

Store the ring separately and remove it before activities involving knocks. Read about oil and resin treatments. If its history is unknown, begin with an emerald valuation before intervention.
