Diamond verification: natural, laboratory-grown or moissanite

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds have the same composition, but specialised gemmological tests distinguish their origin. Moissanite and cubic zirconia are imitations, not diamonds, and can be identified through optical and thermal properties. An HRD Antwerp accredited expert verifies the nature of your stone.

Laboratory-grown diamonds are now widely available and visually almost impossible to distinguish from natural diamonds. Stones such as moissanite are sometimes sold as diamonds. Gemmological verification establishes their identity.

What we can establish

  • Whether the stone is a natural diamond or a laboratory-grown diamond (HPHT / CVD);
  • Whether it is an imitation such as moissanite, cubic zirconia, white sapphire or spinel;
  • Possible treatments applied to the stone.

Why the distinction matters

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds can look identical but have very different market values. Verification before an important purchase helps protect your investment.

Frequently asked questions about natural vs. lab-grown

Are laboratory-grown diamonds “fake”?
No. A laboratory-grown diamond is a real diamond with the same composition as a natural diamond; origin and market value differ. Imitations such as moissanite and cubic zirconia are different materials, not diamonds.
