Choosing a pearl necklace: lustre, matching and care
View a pearl necklace both closely and from a normal wearing distance. A photograph of one pearl cannot show how the whole strand works beside the face.
More than diameter
Pearl quality involves size, shape, colour, lustre, surface, nacre quality and matching. Lustre describes reflection quality. In a necklace, harmony between pearls can matter more visually than the largest pearl's size.
A useful trial
View the necklace against a neutral background, then try it on. Decide whether colour and shape variations look intentional or distracting to you. View paired earrings together under the same light. If you prefer baroque shapes, assess the composition rather than mechanically comparing it with a round strand.
Inspect the clasp, thread and knots. An attractive necklace with worn thread may need restringing before wear. Ask the workshop to preserve pearl order if it forms part of the design.
Care after wearing
Pearl surfaces are sensitive to scratching and chemicals. Apply perfume and cosmetics before putting on the necklace. Gently wipe after wear with a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning. If the thread becomes wet, lay the strand flat to dry before storage.
Store it separately from jewellery that might scratch it. If an offer only says “genuine pearls”, clarify natural pearls, cultured pearls and imitations before comparing quality.
