Ethiopia, a new Paraíba tourmaline source: GIA and Gübelin’s 2026 announcement
The gemstone source map is not closed. Material from a new source brings commercial interest and a need for laboratory reference data.
What was confirmed?
On 27 August 2026, GIA and Gübelin Gem Lab announced that independent investigations confirmed Ethiopia as a source of copper-bearing tourmaline meeting the accepted Paraíba definition. They documented sample provenance and analysed characteristics. GIA stated it could indicate Ethiopia as origin on its tourmaline identification and origin reports.
Why reference samples matter
The laboratories reported useful chemical distinctions in the studied material. The announcement also stated that reference collections would continue expanding for this new production. Detailed papers were planned for a future Gems & Gemology issue at the time.
What the news does not establish
It does not authenticate every stone sold online as Ethiopian Paraíba, set your specimen's price or guarantee future supply. A documented discovery and a commercial promise require separate verification.
Ask for the actual stone's report and check whether an origin conclusion is included. A seller attaching the announcement beside product photographs is insufficient.
Keeping context
Record both the news date and document date. Older guides may list sources known when written; this does not make them useless but warrants checking current information.
